Alba'hian

Alba’hian in Agni language ( fron Akan group in Côte d’Ivoire), means the first light of the day, the dawn.

Since more than a year now, every morning Joana wakes up at 5 and walks for long stretch of times. She begins each new day by getting in contact with the land around her, observing the landscapes, the shapes of buildings or the objects slowly revealing themselves, the streets and its people awakening, starting a new day at the sound of joyful and noisy birds.

What started as a physical training for a  trekking in Asia, gradually became a daily routine, a ritual of introspection, that accompanies her ever since, even when she travels in other countries, especially in Africa.

As the morning light at the beginning of each new day, slowly makes every detail of the material world visible, so this practice of observation has made Joana become aware of the shift in her thoughts and her perception of realities.

She witnesses the energy of the continent which keeps its people going and shape their lives, and the changes in herself.

She has taken the habit of taking pictures of the landscapes that amaze her every morning, rigorously between 5 and 7 a.m. Afterward, using a mixed technique of collage, embroidery, quilting and photomontage, she superimposes on them several layers of ethereal fabrics intertwined with other images she takes during those walks, like silhouettes of passers-by's, street photographs or stills.

The result is the delicate and dreamy toiles which evoke the invisible meanings and revelations of the artist’s morning experiences. The separation and at the same time the relationship between the real world and the world of imagination.

We could say that Joana’s work is made of the same substance memories and dreams are made of: impalpable and barely perceptible images that overlap one another, mixed with ancient suggestions and recent sensations.

It is now the heritage of cognitive science that the mechanisms of our memory operate through a stratified system of different levels of awareness and consciousness: the subconscious draws on the reality of our daily experience and uses "fragments of perceptions" to make sense of all the memories and feelings accumulated at the various levels of consciousness.

With the intuitive power typical of the artist, Joana creates reproductions of memories and sensations.

The long hours Joana spends sewing together the different layers, and embroidering onto the fabrics her motifs and drawings, have become a moment of meditation; another ritual by which she is able to observe herself changing through the process, examine her emotions  and reactions and reshaping them in a different, better way.

The morning light has a symbolic value of rediscovery and illumination in almost every culture.

It's the vital energy that is born again, renovated any new day, it is the hope of a new beginning.

This is a journey into the artist’s own inner life, into the core of her being, an act of courage of total acceptance of the woman she has discovered.

It is her fears, her desires, her joys and sorrows that she has been transforming into golden lines, enriched patterns, beautifully colored and poetic objects which express the joy of being alive.

What she creates is not immediately visible in its entirety. As in her morning walks, the beauty and the complexity of all parts of the artworks are visible to the viewer only after a process of discovery of all the details layered through the different levels. The exploration of each piece recalls the unveiling of a precious hidden treasure.

A similitude with the relationship with her own land: the place where she always feels the most alive and surrounded everywhere by poetry, constantly regenerating energy, beauty.

Gradually she has understood that what she was hoping to find in a journey abroad, she finally discovered in her own “home”.

Alba'hian en langue agni (groupe Akan, Côte d'Ivoire) signifie la première lumière du jour, l'aube.  Depuis un peu plus d'un an, Joana se réveille le matin à 5 heures et marche longtemps. Elle commenece cahque jour en observant les paysages, les formes des bâtiments ou les objets qui se superposent et se dévoilent lentement, les rues et leurs habitants qui s'éveillent, une nouvelle journée qui commence au son du chant des oiseaux.

Ce qui a commencé comme une préparation physique pour un trekking en Asie est devenu une routine quotidienne, un rituel d’introspection, qui l’accompagne depuis lors, même lorsqu’elle se rend dans d’autres pays, notamment en Afrique. Alors que la lumière du matin commence à apparaître, cette pratique d'observation a permis à Joana de prendre conscience de la progression de ses pensées et de sa perception de la réalité. Elle est témoin de l'énergie du continent qui maintient son peuple en vie et façonne leur vie, ainsi que des changements en elle-même. Elle a pris l’habitude de prendre des photos de cet environnement, rigoureusement entre 5 et 7 heures du matin, en utilisant une technique mixte de collage, broderie, matelassage et photomontage, en superposant plusieurs couches de tissus transparents éthérés, entrelacés avec des photos de passants, telles que des silhouettes des photographies de rue ou des natures mortes.

Il en résulte des toiles délicates empreintes de reveries, évoquant les significations et révélations invisibles des expériences matinales de l’artiste. La séparation et à la fois, la relation entre le monde réel et le monde de l'imaginaire. On pourrait dire que le travail de Joana est composé de la même substance que celle des souvenirs et des rêves: des images impalpables et à peine perceptibles qui se chevauchent, mélangées à d’anciennes suggestions et à des sensations récentes. Selon la science cognitive, il a été démontré que les mécanismes de notre mémoire fonctionnent à travers un système stratifié de différents niveaux de conscience: le subconscient s’appuie sur la réalité de notre expérience quotidienne et utilise des "fragments de perceptions" pour donner un sens à toutes les réalités. Les souvenirs et les émotions se cumulent en différents niveaux de conscience. Avec le pouvoir intuitif typique de l'artiste, Joana crée des reproductions de souvenirs et de sensations. Les longues heures passées à assembler les différentes couches de mousseline et à broder ses dessins sur la toile imprimée sont devenues un moment de méditation. Un autre rituel par lequel elle peut tout au long du processus,observer ses changements intérieurs, examiner ses émotions et ses réactions et les restituer de manière différente.

La lumière du matin a une valeur symbolique de redécouverte et d’illumination dans presque toutes les cultures. C'est l'énergie vitale qui renaît, renouvellée chaque jour. C'est l'espoir d'un nouveau départ. C’est un voyage dans la vie intérieure de l’artiste, au cœur de son être, un acte de courage, une acceptation totale de la femme qu’elle a découverte. Ce sont ses peurs, ses désirs, ses joies et ses peines qu’elle a transformés en lignes dorées, en motifs enrichis, en objets colorés et poétiques qui expriment la joie d’être en vie. Ce qu'elle crée n'est pas immédiatement visible dans sa totalité. Comme dans ses promenades matinales, la beauté et la complexité de toutes les parties des œuvres ne sont visibles que par un processus de découverte de tous les détails superposés à travers les différents niveaux. L'exploration de chaque pièce rappelle le dévoilement d'un précieux trésor caché. Une similitude avec la relation avec sa propre terre : le lieu où elle se sent toujours la plus vivante et entourée de poésie, d’une énergie en constante régénération, de la beauté.  Peu à peu,Joana a compris que ce qu'elle espérait trouver dans un voyage à l'étranger, elle l'a finalement découvert chez elle.
